Death's key-Murkon's Refuge

I've been playing this for weeks and am on my way to defeat Murkon. My question is--what does Death's Key do when you invoke it? I don't want to until I really need to since I notice it is a one-use item. (I actually have 2 of them) Any hints on defeating Murkon? I've gotten about halfway through the "tunnels" and been wiped out by one of the sets of escorts.
