Person A writes a tirade of a post (or column) that mentions Julian vs. Gregorian calendars, the inaccuracy of the common belief about when Christ was born, the arbitrariness of counting years in the first place, what's it matter anyway, so stick it in your ear, because I wasn't wrong at first, no I wasn't, you suck, no I wasn't, your logic cannot harm me, my ego is like a shield of steel!
LOL. I am still cracking up... "My stance is as stubborn as titanium carbide, my head is like a block of SAE #14 lead! And don't forget... I have a brain the size of a walnut!"
> [snip] > I suppose it's a mistake to devote so much time to such a trivial issue -- but actually I'm not. I'm less riled up about when the millenium actually starts as I am about the humongously widespread wave of mass refusal to admit error or accept a truth that isn't as intrinsically "cool."
I blame the Media (always a convenient scapegoat :). Advertisers always aim for what they believe is the most accessible portion of their market, but in reality that part is the LCD -- the Lowest Common Denominator of mutual understanding and intelligence in the audience. They are "afraid" of confusing the poor souls they are attempting to reach, so you and I are continuously exposed to an avalanche of stupidities and watered-down facts on TV, in the movies, on the radio, etc. It makes me worried that for more and more people, the only touching ground of commonly-shared experience has now become the Television. And we know what an unreliable source of potted misinformation the boöb tube can be, in the absence of critical thought.
My 2¢ rant...
