Map out the cavern (it's 6 rooms) and notice how it'll take you out to the mountains. When you do that, "try to find another way up" and the cavern'll be accessible from the mountains.
Basically, you need to get the giraffe's attention from different directions so that when you finally go west into the valley again, he'll be preoccupied with the cavern and you can make a break for the west.
