First of all, he changed his name to Sam. Then he spent a couple of weeks with me in New Zealand, during which he went through some caves, and some old gun emplacements and tunnels. Although Murkon's Refuge was probably mostly finished at this time, Sam was able to test the concept by running through the tunnels in North Head hitting the walls to see if any treasure fell out, and looking into recesses in the walls and saying "Hey, it's a monster pit!"
He also killed at least four hundred rough humanoids, cannibal cakes, rattlesnakes and slimes in the woods near his home, using a variety of spells and weapons, to make sure the amount of hits needed in the game were a proper reflection of reality, and wrote to numerous quest-supply shops to get an overview of current market prices.
