I think of it as a lost art.

We had a whistler in our house (my dad*) when I was growing up. I am talking about virtuosic, *symphonic* whistling, complete with trills, tremolos, turns, and an amazingly realistic bird call repertoire.

Alas, a prophet has no honor in his own country, so to speak--I remember feeling more irritated by, instead of appreciative of, this talent. Mostly because the whistling always seemed to be done at way-too-early o'clock in the morning.

Whistling seems so intrinsically *cheerful*, doesn't it?
