This probably isn't the right thread to post this message on, but it has to do with quitting, so here goes.
My uncle used to be a heavy smoker. I was born in China, moved here when I was two, and have not spoken a word of Chinese (except to people who do not understand english, and during Chinese school) ever since I started school. I visited my family in China, including my uncle, this past summer. I really wanted him to quit; he really wanted me to start speaking Chinese to my parents. So, we made an little agreement. As long as I spoke Chinese to my parents, he wouldn't smoke, and vice-versa. Now, two months later, I have spoken Chinese to my parents every day, and, as far as I know, he has not smoked a single cigarette (and probably not used a patch or gum, either). Because of this, my uncle's health is undoubtedly far better, and my Chinese is definitely much better. And the fact that the one person is keeping his commitment so well shows to the other person that he really dares about him, and drives him to do well with his own commitment. And since we really do care for each other, we strive do do well with our own commitment also.
No reason for posting this, other than maybe a suggestion for others trying to break or start a habit to make a similar agreement with someone you care about.
