You have to get something that's past that drawbridge first, so don't worry about it just yet.

It would also help to know where you found the gold pieces so far... I haven't played FQ in a long while, but I remember you can get one near the beginning, one as change from the shopkeeper, one in a dead-end in the royal gardens, and one where you found the Yuckyuck leaves. There's 2 in the north fortress, but you can't go there yet.

I think - but I'm not certain; someone else needs to confirm this - you can find one more in the forest.
