I remember reading a book about place names when we were studying Tennessee history. If I can get hold of the reference (it WAS 35 years ago!), I'll post it.
You've probably heard a lot of references to Unicoi and Unaka in E. TN. The Unicoi were a tribe of the Cherokee nation. Unaka is variation of Unicoi.
Some strange names around Johnson City are Haire Town, Shake Rag, Copperhead Road (yep, sung about in the C/W song), Slab Town, and, my favorite, Pot Likker. That was the name of the area in JC where Science Hill HS, Steve Spurrier's alma mater, now stands.
