They tend to do that. I would certainly have called you a Yank if I'd been at school with you. We don't usually know how to tell if someone is a real Yankee or even what the definition actually is, but then, would the average American be able to define a true Cockney?

Unfortunately, kids will tend to use such terms in a derogatory sense more often than not. We have plenty of them for various nations, if truth be told. I think the only one I use with a vengeance is "Frogs", for our European neighbours over the Channel.
