To get inside the tower, you need a password. I'm not going to tell you where to find the password-that's part of the fun of the game!

There are two fortresses. Seeing as you haven't specified which one, I assume you're talking about the one near the volcano (It's the one that's easier to find). You don't have to worry about that one until you're through with the tower.
