Theatre groups have already been mentioned, I belong to one myself and it's a blast, especially when they do a Terry Pratchett play, which they often do to get some money in.

I agree with you on the gym side of things. The only times I ever got conversation at the gym was when I went there with someone I knew. Helped to have someone to spot for you on the bench press and stuff.

My own choice is Ten-pin Bowling. It helps that it's my favourite sport and one I'm also pretty good at. When played in a group there's only one person in play at a time so there's lots of opportunity for talking, expecially while waiting for your ball to come back. And even when you play on your own, there's still time to have a chat with your lane neighbour as there's no rush.
