Actually, while it may not be noble, it's perfectly legitimate. In Deuteronomy 20:5-9, there were reasons for someone not to go to war. The last one in the set is about being afraid and fainthearted. "He should go back home; otherwise his fear may demoralize his comrades as well." Just a bit of psychology; absolutely nothing to do with salvation.
