This is so weird to me. I *like* damaging books a bit. I spine them on purpose so they're a bit easier to read. I love a well-read book that's got some creases ad stuff. My books are all a little beat-up, and I think it gives them character.
I'm not advocating destroying books (and tearing them is a no-no because you can lose some of the text), but I must say I don't get why certain people treat books like they're delicate little objects. One of the great advantages to books (especially paperbacks) is that you can fold 'em up or throw 'em in your pocket or just shove a bunch of 'em into a backpack. Heck, you can even get 'em wet (though I think this tends to make them a bit hard to read). They're not going to break and be expensive to replace the way everything else I carry is.
