I haven't gotten to be in many shows, because they made my music major schedule more insane that it already was.
Do you get a sensation of isolation in that frustration? The impression i get is that virtually everyone in a show feels wierd about casting. I remember being initially unsatisfied with getting the lead villain when i wanted to be the hero (Looking back, Robin Hood was played by my best friend, but he was still a pansy. I so ruled him as the evil Sheriff of Nottingham. Whatever.)
And college meant restriction to only musical shows, and listening to theatre majors who couldn't, can't, and won't ever be able to sing a note properly but who had wonderful stage presence and from whom i learned a great deal. And i did get to be Bob Cratchit my third year, which was TEH BETS anyway because it was a dialect role.
Point is, so what. Either do it full tilt or back out early and not late. Don't drag the other people down with a sore attitude. I hope that doesn't sound mean. I'll wager you've got a strong spirit, and you'll make it. Just remember the Stanislavski principle about peformance absolutely depending on ensemble.
