If that's a weird quirk then I must be weird and quirky. :-) I can't stand it when I see people laying paperbacks face down and open. They don't have hard covers but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be taken care of just as much.
I use Post-its for marking my place when I read my textbooks. I'll put the sticky side on the last page I have to read. It'll be on the right side of the page so that I can fold the rest of the Post-it over to the current page. I've found it helps me to know how much I have left to read - in addition to the previously mentioned Post-it benefits.
