Apparently it must have crawled across the page while a previous reader was reading it, and he or she did the most natural thing-- slammed the book shut on the poor arachnid. Everything was there, perfectly preserved... the eight little legs... or maybe it was only seven... the ichor, squished and streaked across the page... > > I was in high school at the time, and I thought, "COOL!" And then, on the other end of the scale, there's me... I will go to great lengths to avoid squishing a bug between the pages of a book, even by accident. I do a lot of reading outside, and I frequently get little companions to join me in perusing the pages. But I worry that they'll crawl between two pages already past, and I'll squash them when I close the book. So I spend far too much time coaxing them away. This is partly because I don't like killing insects that haven't committed a grave offense (like creeping into my shower or trying to suck my blood), and partly because I don't like finding corpses in my books.
