NOOOOOO. No. *Shudder*. Taking Greyhound cross-country will jar your fillings out, ruin your faith in fellow human beings, leave you constipated, hungry, tired, dirty, and temporarily deaf from the road noise. I speak whereof I know, having traveled 1500+ miles via Hell on Wheels. Unless you like that sort of thing, it's not the last impression we want you to have of America.
Instead, take the train. I rode Amtrak for the first time last week and found it easily accessible, clean, comfortable, airy, uncrowded, and every bit as senic (if not more so). Plus, you can get up and walk around & visit the cafe car (which, while not haute cusine, is at least hot cusine, beating the sandwich from the vending machine in the bus station). For a long trip, you can even book a sleeper. I found the whole experience enjoyable and relaxing.
Sorry to be so long in replying to this, but I didn't just want to shoot down the idea without offering an alternative that I could recommend from first-hand experience.
