His claim was something to the effect that Chrstianity was different than all the other major religions, because all the other religions were based around the concept of "Man seeking God" while Christianity was the only one that had the central tenent of "God seeking Man." >
Let me see if I can field this one (since it appears everyone else has exhausted themselves on the subject ;-)):
Other Religions: "Here is the ladder to heaven. Step up one rung at a time, as best you can. God awaits at the top." *You* must take the steps to seek God. Through perserverance, correct thought, sacrifice, and ritual you *may* get there. You may not.
Christianity: God descends the ladder Himself in the person of Jesus Christ, knocks on your door, and stands ready, willing, and able to pick you up and carry you all the way to the top. He has come seeking you. You are not expected to be able to climb the ladder yourself. Through faith alone in Christ will you get there.
....this is what the pastor meant.
However, note that while Christ has come seeking you, you still have to respond to Him. He won't carry you up the ladder without your consent.
...this is what I believe Frum meant. Each person has the responsibility to "open the door" (seek God)--or to decide not to--themselves.
koala"go away for a few days--people get married, give birth, and have huge religious discussions. Stay home, and no one posts for a week ;-)"mom
