> I just got accepted to the London Study program through my university. I'm going to be taking classes in London with about 50 other students from my school during Fall quarter from September until December. This is totally unlike me, since I go to school only 3 hours from home and have never been on any trip like this before. I don't have any friends going on the program, so I am going to have to make new friends (something that is difficult for me). However, everyone says that being away from home and living in another country is something I should do once in my lifetime. I hope I have a good time and don't get homesick...

Maybe I should know, but I can't remember, so I'm going to assume that you are American. (It's a very American thing to do.)

I wish Middle Tennessee State had offered me such a program. As it was, I didn't see London until I was middleaged, but I will predict that you are going to love the place. London is so different from New York or Atlanta or Los Angeles or Honolulu. The people are friendly. They have a great rapid transit system. Sure they sound a little funny, but they speak a language you can understand. The city is sort of a fairy tale of places that you read about in your first books. The history of the entire world is on display in museums there. You will be walking the same streets as countless historical figures. Check out Soho, go to the theaters and the theatres, both film and stage, see Hyde Park and 10 Downing Street. Visit the cathedrals and palaces. And remember that homesick is all in your head. Don't let it ruin the trip of a lifetime.
Just three cautions:
1. Don't ride the tube alone.
2. When crossing the street, look right then left, instead of left then right.
3. Take an umbrella.
