I don't know a whole lot, but from what I can recall from History of Civ, I think the Orthodox church came about because of a division in the last days of the Roman Empire. There were actually two capitols, one in Rome and the other in Byzantium/Constantinople. The Catholic church was, and still is, based in Rome, while the Orthodox church as it is today came out of Constantinople. But I'm not sure how accurate that is, or how the Orthodox got split into the Greek / Russian denominations.
