I guess I must have set a lot of goals. There have always been a lot of things that I wanted to do before I go to the compost pile. Recently I went sailing on a real sailboat, with real functional sails. It was not tied to the dock like Old Ironsides was when I went aboard. This one was a 44 ft. Catamaran. She had two motors but after we cleared the breakers, they turned them off and hoisted them out of the water. Then the sail went up and away we went with a whisper. The only thing I can compare it to is a sailplane, aka glider, that I rode in back in 1964. The only sound is the whisper of the air. Sail planes and sail boats don't have that engine throb that you get with power. You can hear the water on a sail boat. It's not just the crashing at the bow. It's the little sounds that water makes.
I've "sailed" before on cruise ships, tour boats, speed boats, petal boats, jon boat and canoes. But some how the real sailing had eluded me. For pictures, follow the link. You will find this sailor on the 4th page of that still unfinished album. Howard
