Heck, reading an excerpt of Clancy might as WELL be an entire book. Especially his later ones. (See: Executive Orders, 1000+ pages.)
I started reading Clancy's books...the summer after my sophmore year. I have no life, and so had finished them *all* before my senior year began. I think the best ones were Executive Orders (which is just a continuation of Debt of Honor) and Red Storm Rising, which has nothing at all to do with Jack Ryan, and exists outside of Clancy's "fictional" world. Hunt For Red October and Without Remorse were also exceptional. Not that any of his works *weren't*...
If you ever *do* get around to starting his books, do start at the beginning. In his later books, Clancy alludes to events that occured in earlier books, and sometimes it's important to know about the *earlier* events to understand why the later ones happen. Not that it would completely confuse you, but it helps you understand why Jack Ryan does This in Executive Orders, and it's because of This Other Thing he did in, say...Clear and Present Danger.
