Spider-Man just wrapped up its second weekend, and it now holds the record for both the first and the fourth highest weekends of all time. (Harry Potter and The Lost World were second and third, respectively.) In addition, it took 13 days for Episode 1 to reach $200 million, while it only took Spider-Man nine days.
As for Episode 2, George Lucas himself doesn't think it will break records: "'Star Wars' creator George Lucas already has conceded his film will not break opening-weekend box-office records because it is debuting on about 6,000 theater screens, 1,500 fewer than 'Spider-Man.'" *
