Was this around 1986? That was the year my family first got cable and I distinctly remember watching Return of the Jedi EVERY Saturday on HBO after cartoons. Lately I've been wondering if this memory was accurate; the same movie every single Saturday is a bit much. I was thinking that maybe it only seemed like it was on every weekend because I was so young.
We did not have a VCR in those days and for years Return of the Jedi was the only Star Wars I knew. It was really quite thrilling to learn that there were two other movies out there. And that Obi-Wan was actually alive in one of them!
This also reminds me of a particularly violent fight wherein my brother and I argued over: a. Whether or not Yoda had any legs (after all, you didn't really see them) and, b. Whether or not Yoda was an alien, or just a really, really old man.
