IE 5.5 and Monospace fonts

I am using IE 5.5 on Windows 95, and whenever I go to a website that uses a {font-family: monospace} font specification, I get a weird messed up font which uses lines instead of normal characters. I tried looking around the Microsoft website for a solution, but that behemoth confounded me. Since I know that there are people here who are smarter than I am, I thought I would bring the problem to you. A couple of caveats:

- I don't want to suppress all user styling, so using "Ignore Fonts Specified on Web Pages" under accessibility is not an option.
- OK, one caveat.
