I use mine because:

A - It's a way for me to be able to talk with my
friends, since I'm not able to actually be in chat
or on AIM as much as I like.

B - It's a way for me to say "Hey, I'm having a
bad day over here." and someone will say
something nice to me and make me feel a
little better. *shrug* So I'm shallow. It's better
than you listening to me doing nothing but
whining for the 45 minutes or so I'm in chat a
day.

C - I just like it. I like talking about whatever *I*
want on *my* own little forum, and
occasionally hearing what others think about
what I think.

As for the privacy thing, on LiveJournal, you
can pretty much set any entry to be viewable by
anyone you want, as many people as you
want.
