Computer searching

I have a pretty high opinion of the intelligence of the people at Rinkworks, and I kept telling my mom that I would ask here what sort of laptops were good when she offered to get one for a graduation present. Now that idea is scrapped, but my dad has decided to buy a computer(which I may end up with anyway. Bwahaha).
Anyway, my question is this: What kind of computers are best and what should you look for in one? When my father bought the computer I use now he paid an excessive amount of money for what a lot of people have told me is not much. He wants to avoid making this mistake again. Of course he expects me to know everything about computers just because I spend so much of my time on them, but honestly I don't know a lot. So, can anyone give advice and suggestions? A computer with a good word processer, internet capability and disk space for a good price is probably the kind of thing he's looking for.
If anyone is willing to help in this feel free to ask any questions I didn't think to answer. I'll be greatful for any assistance whatsoever. Thanks :)

Melanie
