1272 BCE + 1000 years forward = 272 BCE. The Romans, Ottomans, and British Empires had dominion after this time. The second part only tells of their *presence* in the land, *not* dominion. The conquering nations did not succeed in removing them completely.

And I already responded to him on this. The point in this case(although he should've said it better) is that they don't purposefully face Jerusalem, but Mecca. It's completely incidental that those living on the *other* side of Mecca pray facing Jerusalem.
