Apr 1, sure signs, a rare find

I have not posted here for a while. I avoid doing so around April Fool's Day because nobody would believe me anyway.

But the honest truth is that I have been busy checking for signs of Spring. Found some. There are wild onions in the yard. A rabbit was in the driveway when I got home this evening. I had been watching my grandson play soccer. I went to Dollywood the other day. I have two chigger bites on my leg. I need a haircut, but don't have time. I keep thinking of Hawaii. There are some unidentified sprouts in the garden. They must be vegetables, because they are in rows. And then the surest sign of all is the motor scooters buzzing up and down the street in front of the house.

Speaking of scooters, I found one the other day. It is what collectors call "barn fresh," which means that is has been sitting in a barn, or other such place for many years. This one was beside the barn which qualifies. My first thought was that it was rare model 52A Cushman (other scooters are medium or well done). But it proved to be something else. The front fork and frame are from a 1946 Cushman model 54 and the body, seat and gas tank are from an early 50's Cushman Highlander. So I have the start of not one, but two scooters.

Before restoration can begin, I need a couple of engines, a three horsepower for the Highlander and a four, five or eight for the model 54. I need two headlights, one taillight, two sets of handle grips, a couple of mufflers, a rear hub, two brake rods, a clutch rod...... Well, you get the picture. It will be a long time before I can even start. But searching for parts is what I like to do.

Before I found this one, I already had a Highlander frame, a 50 series transmission and numerous other parts that I will need for this double project. So I'm off to a good start.

I feel sorry for people who don't have a passion.
Howard
