I don't think I ever spent more than 50 dollars going to a dance. From the get-go, I would either borrow a dress, or sew one, or go to a thrift store and find a vintage masterpiece for under ten dollars. Instead of buying an expensive (okay, 6-12 dollar) boudinier, I would buy some roses+various flora and make 'em for my date, and often times for other girls dates.
To further reduce expenses, we'd eat at a friends house, and I've even gone to a cheap diner, or even a fast food place for supper. It's not terribly magical, or special...but it's different, and always fun if you are with friends!! I never had a date that rented a limo, but I did go to one dance that we carpooled in a giant suburban. The driver learned to drive a stick shift that day, so the ride was really bumpy...but really fun!
Once after a dance, we crammed 10 people into a Jeep Cherokee to go 4-wheeling...and ended up stuck in the mud for several hours, in formal dresses. It was very fun, except for the drycleaning bill.
Oddly enough, the only dance I DIDN'T havea good time at was the senior banquet/dance. They decided to have a luau, and decorated the tables with bowls of live fish. Many idiots decided they would be funny and eat or throw the fishes. After that, I was in a sour mood, so my date and I left shortly after the senior video.
Even though I always had a good time at the dance I went to, it doesn't mean it's for everyone. I think that since you dislike dances, that you shouldn't go, and all of your feelings are perfectly justified!
