Ugh. Ugh ugh ugh. Darth Maul was overhyped to the point that the audience was expecting him to be worse than Vader and twice as big. He even had his own little action figure from fast-food restauraunts. In short, the audience expects Maul to be a really big, really bad guy that is a major impediment to whatever it is the good guys are trying to do. This usually involves several fight scenes, evil plots, and consequently screen time. There was one fight scene and he died. This gives the impression not that Obi-Wan or whomever killed him was some really cool macho Jedi, but that Darth Maul wasn't quite as good as he was cracked up to be.
