I think that's because Tolkien used female characters about as often as an exceptionally sturdy stick or wagon wheel. There were maybe three major female characters in the whole epic, and one of them was a big nasty spider. Without putting Arwen in Glorfindel's place in that river scene the *only* woman in Fellowship would have been Farmer Maggot's wife. And you can't have an epic fantasy movie without a reasonably important heroine, it's bad form. So in my opinion it was good move, movie-wise. But Glorfindel did get gypped.

Personally I missed Tom Bombadil and his happy-go-lucky songs. I hope they actually did film scenes with him, and they slap them onto the DVD when the time comes. But that's just me.
