2001 Oscar Nominations Game Discussion! posted by Sam on Saturday, March 16, 2002, at 10:29:08:
Random Commentary on my picks:
BEST PICTURE: Moulin Rouge I had to go with Moulin Rouge on this one out of a gut feeling that it *deserves* to win - even though it'd be a serious dark horse. Also, my brother tends to be a good indicator of which film will win Best Picture - whichever of the five films he liked the least will *inevitably* win. The only exception that comes to mind immediately was the inanity last year with "Gladiator," but, frankly, that was a two-way race rather than a five, and he *did* like CTHD better. So it might hold up after all. ;-}
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM: Shrek If anyone picks "Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius" for this category, he gets a beating. And that's all there is to it.
BEST ORIGINAL SONG: Vanilla Sky (Vanilla Sky) Since I'm not familiar with any of the five songs nominated in this category, I picked one based on two criteria: which one had the neatest title, and which one sounded the least like a sickening saccharine pop ballad. I'm pretty positive all five of them *are* pop ballads, but, hey. I'm still holding out hope for a *real* song to get a nomination one of these days.
BEST SOUND EFFECTS EDITING: Pearl Harbor I could see Pearl Harbor being thrown a bone in this category. Console the investors a bit and whatnot.
