Actually, I just had a thought. If you have a plane and runway space, you can go from Newcastle airport (further north than Birmingham) to Luton/Gatwick/Heathrow/Stansted/London City in about 45 minutes. Wish I'd been able to get out of Cardiff as quickly last year...

PS: I just re-read the French transport minister's claim that the English rail system is the worst in Europe in terms of security, and the French system is far superior. I never knew Sangatte was in England...
