For a variety of reasons. My mother lied about her age because she was almost two years older than my father. Not a good reason. She also lied about her age when applying for a job. Most companies want younger employees. I remember when she was 52, she applied for a job as a bookkeeper at a place that was known not to hire people over 50. So she said she was 47 and got the job. That's a good reason. (BTW, she was really 54.)
