I think that's a bad idea. I mean, first off, you need to decide what counts as a sucky future - "Planet of the Apes" is pretty bad if you happen to be human, but I'll bet the gorrillas don't think so. So you end up just trying to safeguard your personal future. Which means that you arrange it so that you (or your kids) rule the world. No, obviously, if you're me that's a good idea. But I couldn't recoomend it to anyone else.

And besides, meddlling with time is about the best way to make sure things get even worse. After the Cuban Missle Crisis, I've just left well enough alone.
