Maybe he was thinking of it subconsciously, and didn't realize until afterward that Tolkien may have played a part. It seems to happen to me sometimes -- I'll come up with what I think is a cool new idea, and then I'll figure out later that I've just adapted it from something else I'd temporarily forgotten about.
