For me, the key to answering this poll was the phrase "in real life." I considered what would be the coolest thing to add to my life, as it is now.
My answer was "cloaking device."
Warp speed would be pretty useless to me in my life as it is now. For one thing, you can't really use warp speed to go from place to place on the planet's surface. And even if you could use a slowed-down version of warp drive to get around down here, I wouldn't use it very often because to me, getting there has always been half the fun.
Same thing for the transporter. It would actually be useful, but since I enjoy travelling, I probably wouldn't use it for much other than commuting to and from work, which is only a ten-fifteen minute drive anyway, so why waste the power?
The holodeck would be neat, but it'd probably ruin me. I already spend enough time and money doing things that serve no purpose besides recreation. If I had a holodeck, I might go in and never be seen or heard from again...
Androids? It'd be nice to have a friend like Data, but since I'd also have to worry about characters like Lore, I'd just as soon stick with real people.
A universal translator wouldn't see much use in my real life. Everybody I know, everybody I interact with already speaks the same language as me.
But a cloaking device! That would be COOL to have in my current everyday life. If I saw somebody coming who I didn't want to talk to, I could turn it on and disappear. Ever wish you could be that fly on the wall? With the cloaking device you could be! If a cop tried to stop you for speeding, you could turn on your cloaking device and never get a ticket! The cloaking device would be the coolest AND the most useful Star Trek technology to add to my everyday life.
