The story you remember is "Snow White and Rose Red" by the Brothers Grimm, and (as LaZorra says) unrelated to "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs". Plot summary:

Snow White and Rose Red are sisters. A bear wants to come into their cabin to get warm, and their mother lets him in. The children play with him and he comes back often and becomes their friend.

Then the bear says he is going away to guard his treasure from the evil dwarfs. Later, Snow White and Rose Red have some difficulty with an insulting and annoying dwarf, whom they save from various perils and receive only ingratitude in return. One day the girls find the dwarf's treasure, at about the same time that the bear shows up again. The bear smacks the dwarf silly, turns into a handsome prince, and marries Snow White. Rose Red marries the prince's brother, who was never mentioned in the story before, but apparently springs into existence solely so there will be somebody for Rose Red to marry.
