That isn't a RinkWorks original. That has been standard online practice since the old BBS days. I know that *I've* been using it since 1991 when I first got online at a local BBS called Analytical Engine. It can signify one of two things -- if the word in between the asterisks is a verb, it is treated as an online action (i.e. *shrug*, *sigh*, etc.) If the word is something else, it is usually interpreted as an alternative to italics.
