Sam's is a warehouse-type store that's owned and operated by the same people that own WalMart. You have to be a member of the club to shop there, and membership is $35 a year and up. The concept is simple: they sell stuff in bulk. You spend more money when you go shopping there, but the per-unit prices are cheaper than shopping at a regular grocery or retail store.
Sam's carries a wide variety of merchandise. Groceries, clothing, books, videos, appliances, electronics, you name it they have it. You can even get your film developed there.
They also run a rebate program on a monthly basis. If you buy something there that's listed in their rebate flyer that month, you can send in your proof of purchase and get some of your money back. I bought my 19-inch monitor at Sam's and got a $50 rebate back on it. I'll likely end up getting my scanner there too, eventually.
It's been a while, so I may have remembered the prices for hard drives I saw incorrectly, but I'm still sure they were less expensive than what you'd pay at a computer store. I'd be happy to purchase one for you and ship it when the time comes, if the price is right and you're still interested. Although I'd probably want to ask for the money in advance for something that pricey.
