> These sites, and others like them, can be pretty cruel to the people whose photos they are using (in most cases, if not actually illegally, certainly without the person's knowledge and consent). I don't approve of making fun of people for their looks, I don't approve of making fun of people behind their backs, and I don't approve of embarrassing total strangers for the sake of dubious humour. Then why do I find these sites so incredibly, fall-over-laughing FUNNY? Huh. I guess I'm a hypocrite. This isn't really a post asking whether I'm wrong to like these sites, because I will continue to like them whether the answer is "yes" or "no", but opinions would be interesting.
I found the sites you mentioned, clicked around a bit and did not find them funny enough to hold my interest for too long. Some of the captions were amusing, and I wasn't offended by the sites (I'm pretty open-minded, so it takes a lot to offend me), but something still bothered me. At first, I couldn't quite figure out what it was, but I think part of it is the fact that people spend time on this stuff. Maybe I'm also uncomfortable because it wasn't so long ago that someone took time to doctor a photo of me and post it for people to see. The most painful part was the fact that someone went to so much trouble to hurt me, and he didn't even know me. I was just left wondering what on earth I could have done to deserve such treatment.
So, now that I've succeeded in saying nothing for a whole paragraph, what's my point? I'm not sure. I just know that, while I like humor and I enjoy an excuse to laugh, something about those sites still felt wrong. People are being made fun of, and they can't defend themselves. I think that's why I feel uneasy.
