We currently have a dial-up account with a local service provider called CoreComm. When we first signed up, the company was called ERiNet and they were based in my home town and only offered internet service in Ohio. They were perfect for us; we had just moved to a new town that didn't have a local access number for Prodigy, which I had been with for three years. ERiNet had lower rates, (if you paid for the whole year in advance) and had local access numbers all over the state, including in our new town.
About a year and a half after we signed on, ERiNet was purchased by Voyager.net. In buying ERiNet, Voyager became a tri-state ISP operating in Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan. They let us keep our old email address, and their rates actually dropped!
Voyager was acquired by CoreComm around a year ago. CoreComm is full-service telcom company; they offer local telephone service as well as dialup internet and DSL, I believe. And we still get to keep our erinet.com email address. They did raise the rates back up on us, though.
As far as I know, they still only offer internet service in Ohio, Indiana & Michigan. So if you want to switch ISPs, you'll have to move. :oP
