Having now witnessed the spectacular event, i must concur with your evaluation. At least it looked like something with real Darwin potential.

First of all, it wasn't a tree getting blown up. The tree was crammed full of thousands of bottle rockets (pointed in various directions), with a small cup or can of gasoline suspended over it. The "operators" stepped off about 20-30 feet and shot the gasoline with a rifle, igniting the tree and initiating a massive chain reaction of bottle rockets firing.

When i realized it was unguided bottle rockets going off, i just made a point to keep at least one row of people between the tree and my person (we were about 30-40 feet away, easy distance for bottle rockets, and a few did fly by us). Only about half of the fireworks, according to the "experts," went off, so the display was quite disappointing even by the standards of those who watch it every year.

Blah.

Penny "I thought they should have lit it with either by firing a flaming arrow with a bow, or else by sending a flaming ball of tar down a zip line into the tree--now THAT would have been something to see." stamp
