I'll tell you what I've learned from friends going to college: It's a 4 year party that your parents pay for

Boy did I miss out! When I went to college, I had a part time job to pay for my education. My schedule varied, but usually was something like this:
5 am to 8 am - work
8:30 - 2:30 classes
3 pm -6 pm work
Then I studied a while and went to bed early so I could get up a 4 am.
Weekends were different. I went to work at 8 am and got off at 3 pm.
I worked for the local daily newspaper. I wrote sports, straight news, real estate transfers, and obits. I read copy and proof, set corrections on the Linotype, swept the floor in the shop, cleaned the ink decks on the press, poured pigs and ran ad copy. I covered ball games and car crashes, attended city council meetings, and county court.
I didn't do all of those things all of the time. I was Mr. Available and filled in where I was needed. This was in the mid-fifties and I made the current minimum wage of 75 cents an hour. In my senior year, it took an act of Congress to get me a raise to $1 an hour. Sunday was the day I rested because I usually didn't have the strength to study and could barely afford to eat.
My parents weren't able to help me. In fact, I remember giving my father $40 to have the brakes fixed on his car. I can't remember where I got that much money. Usually I had less than $5 in my wallet, and that was eating money.

As far as a college eductation is concerned, you will probably use only about 10% of what you learn, but it's that 10% that makes the difference. Some timee I think I learned as much at work as I did in classes.

I guess I missed the party.
