> Did you use the numeric keypad for the numbers? That's the rectangle of numbers on the right side of the keyboard that looks a little like a calculator. The various shortcuts that insert characters only work if you do them on there, and not if you do them in the row of numbers above the main part of the keyboard.

•• Hey! It works! All this time I thought that keypad was there in case you wanted to carry around a PC instead of a pocket calculator. I don't remember turning the num lock on, but when I turned it off, it didn't work anymore. Now I wonder why the numbers start in the bottom left corner instead of the top left corner like on a telephone or calculator. I had never noticed that before, but I'm sure there must be a good reason. á È ë ö Hey, this is fun!
