Webster's is not actually a trademarked name -- anybody in the world can come along and made a "Webster's" dictionary, legally. Are you sure "Webster's New World" fits your analysis? It's the one a particularly smart high school English teacher of mine insisted upon. But for what it's worth, I like American Heritage better -- and indeed, that's the one that had the more specific definition in this case.

But if you'd like Webster's Revised Unabridged:

1. To observe; to examine with care.
2. To read through; to read carefully.
