It had credit cards and keys and cash and the usual stuff in. We'll probably find most of it tomorrow morning, thrown over someone's back fence or into a bush. The cards have been cancelled, the locks double-bolted, and the police have just left after filing a report and not drinking any tea. Ordinarily, you'd think that this sort of thing, being broken into WHILE YOU'RE IN THE NEXT ROOM, would have made me feel vulnerable or something. It didn't. Weird, that.

How "did" it make you feel? I'd probably be really angry.
Somebody knows you really well. They knew that you wouldn't likely be in that part of the house at that time. They knew your door was unlocked. They knew that something valuable was there. They knew how to get in and back out without beings seen by a neighbor. My guess is that it was someone you know, and maybe someone you trust and would never suspect.
Around here, such a crime would be very risky. Burglers tend to get shot.
