I like to take up odd jobs during the summer to keep myself from sitting on the couch, eating Twinkies and HoHos, and watching talk shows. As teachers, we don't make as much money as we deserve. I'm happy with my summer jobs as neighborhood lawn-mower, dog-walker, baby-sitter, and gigalow. > Friar"anythingtobringhomethebacon"Tuck
You may get a check in the summer, but you aren't being paid for sitting on a couch. There is a proceedure for determining if you are being paid when you aren't teaching. Just quit your job at the end of the school year. Depending on your contract, you will probably be given a choice of a lump sum that has been withheld from your checks during the school year, or you will be given the choice to continue to get checks until school starts in the fall. But that is money that you already earned. You may get paid *in* the summer, but you don't get paid *for* the summer.
Many moons ago, I got ten checks a year, one every four weeks. That was followed by 12 weeks of starvation. By negotiation, we got the school board to split our annual salary into 24 equal parts, and pay us twice a month, year around. It made life a little easier, but guess who got the interest on the held-back money. Most schools, both public and private, have gone through the same negotiations, and now, even some teachers believe they are being paid for not teaching in the summer. Read your contract. It may contain other surprises. Howard
