Think I'll try something new. Yesterday I saw a pre-screening of this flick with my spouse, and we kind of liked it even though it was pretty flawed. So welcome to my first-ever "Comparative Nutshell Movie Review".
Movie: The HAUNTING.
Scary factor: Nope.
Premise: Things that go thump in the night.
Passing cinematic ressemblance: Bram Stoker's DRACULA.
Computer game ressemblance: Can we say "The 7th Guest"?
The REAL stars of the show: the Hill House (very goth), and the amazing sub-sonic basso sound design.
Average Joe-on-the-Street rating: 3 out of 5 stars. You Basic Movie Critics' rating: 1¾ stars.
Bonus commentary from Dave: "I really liked the sound effects best. The house kept groaning like it had gas pains..."
Verdict: A disturbing trend showing that CGI and great F/X can actually rescue a movie that would otherwise be rather forgettable.
"Pas mal de tout. Pas bon non plus..."
